Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Alice Anderson significant in Australian history?

Alice challenged social norms of her time by proving that women could master technical skills and succeed in business. She opened doors for women in trades, technology, and entrepreneurship long before “gender equality” was a recognised term. Her legacy continues to inspire women in STEM, trades, and leadership today. Recognising Alice honours not only her achievements but also the broader contribution of Australian women who pushed boundaries and reshaped society..

Why is a bronze statue of Alice Anderson important for Australia?

A bronze statue ensures Alice’s story is permanently visible in public space—something women’s histories are too often denied. Statues in Australia overwhelmingly commemorate men. By creating public art in the form of a monument to Alice, we help to redress this imbalance and celebrate a trailblazer whose vision was ahead of her time. The statue will serve as a source of inspiration for future generations, reminding Australians of her innovation, courage, and leadership and the art of the possible.

What’s the status of the campaign and where will the statue go?

We have made a formal request to the City of Boroondara to support the statue. Our hope is that Council will identify a piece of land close to Alice’s original garage in Kew, so her legacy can be celebrated right where it all began.

Why are statues of women important? Aren’t statues old-fashioned?

Public statues are more than works of art — they are visible storytellers of our history and values. In Australia, the vast majority of statues commemorate men, leaving women’s achievements underrepresented in our public spaces. Honouring women like Alice Anderson with a bronze statue helps to correct this imbalance, ensuring her pioneering contributions are recognised and remembered. Far from being old-fashioned, statues remain a powerful and lasting way to celebrate individuals whose legacies continue to shape our society.
